Self - Myself, Yourself, Ourselves
SELF looks beyond the surface of living and mines art and life for new avenues of SELF expression.Self - Myself, Yourself, Ourselves
SELF is a forum where artists explore self-portraiture in traditional and non-traditional media, a place where they can look back through art history or into the now and perhaps find new meaning or voice in their struggles for identity.
Portraiture has been created in many forms -- from Albrecht Dürer's self portrait depicting himself as Jesus Christ and Frida Kahlo's compelling self portrait paintings, to more contemporary interpretations of identity and portraiture such as Chuck Close’s photorealism, Howardena Pindell's word paintings and videos, Robert Mapplethorpe's photo identities, Cindy Sherman’s film stills and staged photo sets, and modern day explorations of identity by Cai Guo-Qiang .
SELF looks beyond the surface of living and mines art and life for new avenues of SELF expression.
For our first SELF exhibition, we will focus on the self portrait. Both visual and multimedia artists are encouraged to participate in SELF. If you have a photo, sound byte or movie to share, load it up to our groups.
